Twilight Series
It’s Friday Twilight Time!
Since the introduction of twilight yacht racing in Tasmania by Bellerive Yacht Club over 30 years ago, twilight racing has grown in popularity to now be offered by four clubs on the Derwent River.
The Geilston Bay Boat Club has been conducting Friday night twilight racing above the bridge for about 25 years and the joint effort between Motor Yacht Club of Tasmania/Lindisfarne Sailing Club has been providing racing for 10 years. This arrangement between the clubs located above the bridge works extremely well with the clubs alternating Friday nights. “The clubs are very cooperative with each other, they try hard to get the best outcome for the benefit of participants”, said coordinator Nigel Grey.
Friday twilight racing is a stress free way to introduce crews to racing. Friday nights tend to be less demanding on crews than other forms of racing. The clubs involved promote a culture of good times and less stress. The above the bridge race area between Geilston Bay and the Tasman Bridge is more contained, generally has smoother water and everyone can see each other on the water. The racing conditions can still be challenging to crews due to complicated tides and currents and fading breezes. Regardless of the sailing conditions the priority is having fun! Laughter on boats is mandatory!
Entry forms and sailing instructions are available from the relative clubs.
